Community,
Empowerment.

Lunu Jema walks alongside families across Lamu — bringing health education, maternal care and practical training to the people who need it most, right where they live.

Serving Lamu Island, Mpeketoni, Witu and the wider archipelago.

Our Story
"We started with one doorstep conversation — and it never really stopped."

Lunu Jema began in 2016 as a small circle of neighbours in Lamu Town who noticed that families were travelling hours for basic health advice. Mothers missed antenatal visits. Young people had questions nobody was answering. So we started walking — house to house, village to village — carrying information, encouragement and a listening ear.

Today we are a registered community-based organisation working across the Lamu archipelago. Our teams are drawn from the communities they serve, which means trust comes first and language is never a barrier. We train local health volunteers, run maternal and child health clinics, and host workshops on nutrition, hygiene and disease prevention.

Everything we do rests on one belief: lasting health is built by communities, not delivered to them. We don't arrive with answers — we arrive with questions, and we build the answers together.

How We Work

our seven pillars

Simple, consistent practices that keep our work grounded in the communities we serve.

Lishe

Every programme starts with a village meeting. Residents tell us what they need — we build around that, never the other way round.

Uwekezaji

We recruit and train health promoters from within each community, so knowledge stays in Lamu long after our team moves on.

Nature

House-to-house visits mean no mother, elder or child is left out because they couldn't travel to a clinic that day.

Jamii

Practical handwashing, water treatment and sanitation guidance tailored to coastal households and shared compounds.

Elimu

All our materials are delivered in Kiswahili and the local dialects people actually speak at home, never in jargon.

Maendeleo

We track referrals completed, children immunised and households reached — and we publish those numbers openly each year.

Afya

Health is at the heart of everything we do. We run community clinics, distribute essential health products and share practical guidance on nutrition, hygiene and maternal care so families across Lamu can stay well.

In Their Words

Voices from our community

What partners, volunteers and neighbours say about working with Lunu Jema.

They came to our village in Mpeketoni and sat with us for three hours before saying a single word about health. That is when I knew they were different. My daughter's immunizations are now complete.

Amina BakariMother of three · Mpeketoni

I trained as a community health promoter with Lunu Jema two years ago in Witu. Today I run my own household visits in my ward. They gave me skills, not just a certificate.

In Pate Island, ss a partner organization, we've worked with many local groups. Lunu Jema's reporting is honest, their community relationships are deep, and their follow-through is exceptional.
